biography
My brother and I started playing music and writing songs together almost as soon as he
got his first guitar. That was the summer of 1997, and shortly after we start calling
ourselves the cross fishes. I don’t really remember what my initial motivation for
making music was, but I know we always tried to stay close to God’s Word in our
lyrics.
Musically we started out with basic rock and roll garage band stuff. We played for
our family and friends at birthday parties, cookouts and other events. That was when
I first started to pray that our music would touch people’s lives and turn their
attention to God.
I guess 'joy' was our first real punk song, and then we started playing the songs we
had already written faster. Mxpx’s “Slowly going the way of the Buffalo” was a big
influence on our style. We covered "Tomorrow's Another Day"
for a talent show at Will's school. Then I got on board with the Deliriou5?
and Sonicflood worship stuff. I really felt (and still feel) punk could be used not just for
entertainment, but to worship God.
So now we’re here in 2003, many songs written and played solely for God in the
privacy of our downstairs, just me and Will rockin’ out for Jesus. Javier has been
faithful to play drums with us on the few occasions we have done shows, and we
cannot thank him enough for his contribution to the fishes. Our sessions have grown
few and far between now that I’m in college, and Will is involved in other musical
projects. But the fire still burns in us for God to receive the sound we have, from our
lips and from the lips of others.
If it is God will, we will be able to worship with others through recordings and live
performances, but even if it is not, we will continue to praise Him everywhere we go
with everything we do.
